Agnes Obel, the queen of sonorous, serene alt-pop, is back after a three year hiatus.
Showing off three years of evolved songwriting, “Familiar” is really anything but. Her lower range vocal mods in the chorus could throw off the less flexible fans. That being said, I think the artificial baritone chorus is a welcome change in tone. It contrasts her natural beauty with a unique and appealing semi-artificial counterpart and is a clever and alluring way of duetting with herself.
We are hoping that this means an album is nigh. Especially since her new sound could mean a new and excitingly modern soundcape to explore.
